Australia blocks five more illegal online gambling sites
By Lucy Wynne

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has blocked five further offshore gambling sites after they were found breaching the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

The latest sites blocked include: Viperspin, Just Casino, Betandplay, Play Fina and Comic Play Casino.

Since its initiation, the ACMA has blocked a total of 835 illegal gambling and affiliate websites. Since the ACMA started enforcing new illegal offshore gambling rules in 2017, 215 illegal services have pulled out of the Australian market.

Website blocking is one of a range of enforcement options to protect Australians against illegal online gambling.

The ACMA can block a website if it is providing prohibited iGaming to customers in Australia (such as iCasinos, online slot machines and services that allow in-play online sports betting).

The regulator can also block a website if a company is publishing ads for illegal iGaming or 'unlicensed regulated interactive gambling services' in Australia.

Recently in Australia, Stake.com entered into a legal battle with Stake, the Australian Government launched its BetStop self-exclusion register and Tabcorp was refunded AU$83m (US$53.69m) by the Australian Taxation Office.

Crown Resorts was also recently handed an AUSTRAC penalty worth a staggering AU$450m and Victoria will be bringing in stricter gambling measures by 2024.
