yama Governor Yoshinobu Nisaka has urged investors to look at developing an integrated resort in his city.

Despite intense competition from other Japanese prefectures, the region is determined to pursue casino resort development.

Nonetheless, Nisaka states that in order for it to be politically palatable, it would need to be restricted to foreigners only, due to the stigma surrounding problem gambling in the region.

Speaking at the Japan Gaming Congress, Nisaka said: “In Japan, if someone is seen as a gambling addict, everyone will turn against the project. It’s a very absolutist view.

“Personally, I’m not that worried, but considering the position of Wakayama Prefecture, in order to gather everyone’s support for the project to build an IR, it should be a gaming centre for foreigners only. Then all the political opposition would melt away.”

Nisaka has stated he is strongly in favour of developing an integrated resort as a means of attracting wealthy leisure tourists.

Whilst any casino resort built in Wakayama would be on a smaller scale than that built in Osaka, Nisaka still envisages a high-end luxury style development.

He adds: “Wakayama is a worthy resort location, please consider placing an integrated resort with us.”
