Macau GDP grows 10% in Q1, gaming and tourism up
By Josh Fisher
u’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 10.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, according to the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC).

GDP rose to MOP93.58bn ($11.70bn) in Q1, whilst the gaming and tourism industry grew by 11.3% and 20.9% respectively.

The figures represent the third consecutive quarter of growth in real GDP for Macau.

A DSEC statement attributed the return to double-digit growth to the “improving exports of services and investments, as well as a relatively lower base of comparison in the first quarter of last year”.

Gaming services in Macau are included in exports when calculating the city’s GDP, in order to reflect expenditure by tourists in the city’s casinos.

In April, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau reported that total casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) had gone up 13% year-on-year.
