Macau visitor numbers continue to rise
By Harrison Sayers

According to data released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), Macau has seen a 12.2% month-to-month increase in visitor numbers, fuelled by an influx of Mainland Chinese tourists.

More impressive than the month-to-month increase is the fact that year-over-year visitation numbers to the gambling hub saw an even larger upswing of 18.7%.

The largest increase came from same-day visitors, up 21.6%, with overnight visitors going up by 16.3%. However, the average length of stay actually declined, albeit by just 0.1 day year-over-year to 1.2 days.

Over 2.5 million of the visitors came from Mainland China, representing a 25.3% year-over-year increase, with a 31% increase from the Individual Visit Scheme now totalling 1.3 million visitors.

Guandong Province, which borders Macau, saw over 1 million of its residents visit the region in August, adding to the 24.2% increase of visitors arriving by land, which reached over 2 million.

The stats for August mean that, during the first eight months of 2018, Macau has received over 23 million visitors, up 8.9% year-over-year.

September could see the trend of increasing visitors slow down as a result of the impact of Typhoon Mangkhut.
