The proposed bill originally fell two votes short of the 48 needed but a second vote in the afternoon saw a 52-38 win in favour of passing the legislation.

This second vote took place because four lawmakers were unable to attend the morning vote and one pushed for a second vote when they were present.

The bill was sent to the Senate shortly afterwards, where it is expected to be signed into law.

Both chambers boast a Republican majority that has previously supported the bill’s approval.

Those against legal sports betting are concerned it could lead to potential tampering with athletic events and problem gambling.

The North Dakota Constitution currently prohibits gambling, except for charitable gaming, multi-state lottery and horseracing.
