Genting UK halts live poker activities amid pandemic struggles
By Owain Flanders

According to Poker News, an anonymous employee in the Birmingham Cardroom was informed of the decision to discontinue live poker in Genting casinos.

Another source claimed the Genting Resorts World Casino in Birmingham would be losing 98 employees, with an additional 20 to 50 jobs lost in every Genting casino in the UK.

Last week, it was announced that Genting was considering closing three of its UK casinos, including properties in Torquay, Bristol and Margate.

The operator wrote to its employees to detail the plans as it struggled to mitigate losses created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement to Genting workers, Genting Casinos UK president and COO Paul Wilcock described “unprecedented challenges” created by the crisis.

According to a report released by Bloomberg, Genting Malaysia Berhad is expected to cut around 3,000 jobs after the operator decided to downsize operations in the region.

Genting Malaysia announced a net loss of MYR453.9m ($104.4m) for Q1 2020, a significant decrease from net profit of MYR253.1m in 2019.

Genting’s total revenue was MYR1.96bn for the same period, a drop of 29% year-on-year.

Gambling Insider has contacted Genting for comment on the shutdown of its live poker activities.
