Gaining a foothold

David Harris, Program Tech Team Lead at ReferOn, speaks to Trafficology about the company, its plans for 2024 and potential new markets

What are ReferOn’s plans for 2024?

We launched this year with what we believe is one of the most technologically advanced affiliate management platforms in the industry. Since going live back in February, we have been busy signing partners and getting the word out about ReferOn.
We have been expanding our client base over the past 10 months, signing new deals and extending existing ones, butwe have also focused on supporting our internal structures to ensure our tech stack performs as well as it can. Finally,we’ve been scheduling new features releases andupgrades to maintain high affiliate management standards. We’ll have more details on these in the coming months.

What changes or trends have you noticed in the affiliate market in 2023?

From my experience, affiliation at its core has not changed, but I’m starting to see a gradual shift to more data-driven reports and more reliance on stat aggregators and APIs, thus giving more transparency to the day-to-day than ever. This, I believe, will continue to grow as the market evolves.
More generally, technology is enabling us to grow and operate much faster than previously and because it is more accessible, it is providing more transparency, which is a key factor in our industry.
It’s almost a cliché, but transparency is always going to build that relationship no matter what business model you’re in. Once there is transparency and trust, these features have to be replicated through all the functionalities of the business such as tracking, rewards or keeping up-to-date with payments. ReferOn combines these with new features such as: dynamic variables and the ability to add enhanced parameters such as a Googletag in our tracking with ease. We also encourage postbacks or pixels to further enhancetracking visibility.

Are you looking to expand into new markets? (LatAm or US maybe...)

This is an interesting question – while we work in the affiliate space, we are the data processors as the ecosystem and therefore are not required to get licensed in the standard way, as would be the case if we were an operator. Therefore, most markets are fine to capture as long as the operator has the correct licence. However, for the US market and because we have a European data hub, we would need to check in regards to laws such as ‘Safe Harbor’ to ensure data security. But as the US market and the product is still growing, we still have some time to prepare for this.

How difficult has it been to gain a foothold in the affiliate market?

In all honesty, gaining a foothold in the affiliate market is not easy and there are many hurdles to overcome, especially when you come to market with a brand new product. However, that also plays into our hands because when we speak with contacts or attend events such as SiGMA Malta, we are able to showcase the strength and difference of the product.
In terms of new clients, 247 Partners and 2rbo have joined ReferOn very recently and are a sign of the quality and strength of our product.
