Coronavirus: Las Vegas casinos to be closed for 30 days
Casinos in Nevada have been temporarily closed as per orders of Governor Steve Sisolak, to slow the spread of coronavirus.
Properties in the state were required to shut all gaming machines, devices, tables, games and other related equipment before midnight on Wednesday, with restaurants and bars located in those properties also closed.
Restrictions will remain in place for at least 30 days and will be monitored by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, which will be responsible for issuing further notices.
The Governor has ordered the closure of all non-essential businesses, including retail stores, due to the coronavirus pandemic; so far, the virus has caused more than 8,000 deaths worldwide, out of around 208,000 cases.
Sisolak said: “This is only common sense. In a time where people are getting sick from simply being near others, this is not the time for gyms to remain open. This is not a time for casinos to be open.
“We have many vulnerable populations in the state of Nevada and we have a shared responsibility to protect the elderly, the healthcare workers and all of our first responders.
“This was not an easy decision to make. But in the last few days, groups and entities across Nevada have stepped up. Their efforts during this difficult time will make this storm easier to weather.”
