Asia bulletin: SkyCity appoints Shaun Philp as Chief People and Culture Officer

New Zealand casino operator SkyCity Entertainment has appointed Shaun Philp as its new Chief People and Culture Officer. Philp will assume his role from 4 September 2023 – subject to passing all regulatory approvals.

Asia bulletin: SkyCity appoints Shaun Philp as Chief People and Culture Officer

Philp is currently a senior human resources executive at Chorus New Zealand with expertise in leadership support, culture transformation and business execution across the financial infrastructure and telecommunication sectors.

Before his role at Chorus New Zealand, Philp held the role of General Manager of Human Resources at AMP New Zealand, and has a history working in both Australia and New Zealand.

Philp studied at the University of Auckland, and is a graduate of Harvard Business School and London Business School.

In the interim, SkyCity’s current Manager of Employee Services – People & Culture Auckland, Greg McNair, will take up an acting position as Chief People and Culture Officer until Philp is appointed.

The appointment of a new Chief People and Culture Officer at SkyCity comes a year after the operator faced an inquiry as to whether it was fit to hold a casino licence.

Last year, the South Australia Gambling and Liquor regulator said this inquiry was instigated because of “systemic concerns raised by inquiries in other jurisdictions.”

It also came at the same time both The Star Entertainment and Crown Resorts were facing indictments for compliance failures related to anti-money laundering.

The reinvigoration of this position at SkyCity possibly highlights a move to further its CSR initiatives, and show regulators it can act as a complaint and sustainable organisation.
