The Lottery Corporation in Australia requests for credit card ban exemption

In Australia, The Lottery Corporation has called for an exemption from the impending gambling reform which aims to prevent bettors from gambling with credit cards.

The Lottery Corporation has called for the exemption due to its supposed take on ‘the low harm nature of lotteries.’

The lottery giant has approached the Senate to make lotteries exempt from the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill, and allow customers to continue buying scratch cards and lottery tickets with credit cards.

Earlier this year, the Australian Government was looking to amend the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 to prevent users from wagering with credit cards. The Lottery Corporation is the only gambling company to oppose this decision with its former parent company, Tabcorp, being in favour of the proposed amendment; to show its support of responsible gambling.

The Lottery Corporation’s CEO, Sue van der Merwe, stated: “The (inquiry) committee’s recommendations reflected the finding that lotteries have a lower harm profile and recommended that lotteries are exempt from a ban on online gambling service providers of wagering, gaming and other gambling services from accepting payment by credit cards, including via digital wallets.”

Sportsbet showed its support of the new proposed amendment commenting: “We share the Government’s view that wagering customers should only be able to conduct their wagering activity with their own clear funds.

“There should be no capacity directly, or through the use of intermediaries such as digital wallets or pre-paid cards, for customers to use a credit card issued by a licensed entity to fund their wagering.”
