The monthly gaming revenue statistics are in for the year, including the month of December.

Macau December GGR marks first dip in growth in two years

Key points:

– The accumulated GGR for the year was MOP 226.8bn, a 24% annual increase

– The GGR for December 2024 fell 2% when compared to the year before to MOP 18.2bn

– This is the first time the industry has seen a dip since 2022

The statistics for the month of December have been submitted by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Burea of Macau, giving a full set of results for the year.

This marks the first time gross gaming revenue (GGR) has fallen annually for the first time in two years.

In 2023, GGR was MOP 18.6bn ($2.33bn), but this fell 2% to MOP 18.2bn for December 2024.

However, this dip is offset when looking at the accumulated gross income due to high performance throughout the year.

The accumulated GGR for 2024 was MOP 226.8bn, a 24% increase when compared to the year before.

The biggest months for growth in Macau casinos were at the beginning of the year.

January, February and March all saw annual increases in gross monthly income of above 50%, but this tapered off to an average of 16% in GGR growth in the remaining months.

Good to know: January and February are traditionally some of the busiest months in Macau casinos due to the Chinese New Year celebrations

However, the figures slowing down like this is to be expected considering the region’s return to pre-Covid levels.

In 2019, the GGR of each month was somewhere around MOP 23bn – a figure which Macau is still yet to return to.

The closest the region has gotten to this was May 2024 with MOP 20.2bn.

Earlier this year, Macau’s Office of the Secretary for Security released its latest figures for gaming-related crimes.
