DGOJ tackles online gambling identity theft alongside European gambling regulators

An important governmental meeting took place on Tuesday 4 March between several key regulators in the online gambling sector.
The meeting was part of the Gambling Commission Spring Conference and its goal was to tackle some of the most crucial issues in the sector, including identity theft in online gambling.
The meeting was attended by a range of gambling regulators in the European gambling sector, including France, the UK and Germany.
The DGOJ – the Spanish Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling – was a major participant in the meeting.
The gambling regulation agency gave the presentation “Identity Theft in Online Gambling: The Experience in Spain.”
During the meeting, the DGOJ presented the results of PACS, the Action Protocol for Impersonated Taxpayers. This Spanish procedure was established by Spain’s tax agency Agencia Tributaria (AEAT). The protocol is intended to help Spanish taxpayers whose tax information has been used fraudulently through online gambling identity theft.
Good to know: PACS is a relatively new protocol, as it was only established in April 2024. The protocol was a success, revealing that around 5% of those who won more than 100 Euros in online gambling became victims of identity theft
The PACS was recommended for use in other countries by the DGOJ during its presentation. This is due to how effective the protocol is when it comes to tackling identity theft, including identity theft in the online gambling industry.
Along with the DGOJ presentation, the meeting also covered a range of other topics that are causing problems in the gambling industry.
This included how to tackle illegal gambling, what kinds of tools to use to identify players causing problems, and how best to use AI in the gambling sector.
