GambleAware launches self-help app as new data highlights rising support needs among young gamblers

Key points:

– GambleAware launches the ‘Support Tool’ app offering free, anonymous gambling harm reduction support

– 18–24-year-olds are twice as likely as the average gambler to want to cut down or quit

– Up to 4.5 million people in Great Britain are seeking to reduce or stop gambling

GambleAware has launched a new mobile app, the GambleAware Support Tool, to help users reduce or quit gambling through free and anonymous support.

The release follows new survey data showing that 29% of 18–24-year-olds who gamble in Great Britain say they want to cut down or stop, nearly double the national average of 15%.

The app allows users to track their gambling habits, set goals and access personalised advice aligned with the Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGG).

These internationally recognised standards recommend limits of no more than 1% of income spent on gambling, gambling on no more than four days per month and avoiding more than two gambling types per month.

Good to know: This is currently the only app in Great Britain that integrates LRGG principles to help users reduce gambling risk

The Support Tool responds to findings from GambleAware’s 2023 Audience Segmentation study, which estimated that around 4.5 million adults in Great Britain want to reduce or quit gambling.

Notably, 93% of them said they prefer informal, self-guided methods over formal treatment services.

Alexia Clifford, GambleAware CCO, said: “Whether individuals want to reduce, manage or stay gamble-free, the GambleAware Support Tool is here every step of the journey. Early intervention is key and the app is designed to provide a timely insight into gambling behaviours.”

Users can also access podcasts, educational content and are signposted to formal support options such as GambleAware’s service finder when needed.

The launch follows GambleAware’s recent public call for the National Lottery to improve the visibility of gambling harm support. The 2024 Annual Treatment and Support Survey revealed that 74% of respondents believe the Lottery should clearly signpost to help services.

GambleAware has also warned of increased harm risks among neurodivergent individuals and continues to push for greater consistency in responsible gambling standards across all gambling formats.
