India: Twelve held in Dehradun after police raid illegal casino

Dehradun Police and the Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) uncovered an illegal casino operating within a residential property in Dehradun during a late-night raid over the weekend.
As reported by ThePrint, a total of 12 individuals were arrested on-site, including participants from Delhi and one from Nepal.
According to authorities, the raid took place between Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The group was allegedly found gambling with around 1,900 casino coins in use. Police also seized Rs89,000 in cash, 12 mobile phones and one vehicle from the premises.
The residence, reportedly owned by 38-year-old Shashank Gupta from Gurugram, is suspected to have been used regularly for such illegal gambling sessions. Gupta was among those detained during the operation and is believed to have played a role in organising the events.
The arrested individuals include several residents from Dehradun district, Delhi and nearby regions, suggesting a broader network of participation.
Good to know: All suspects are being investigated under India’s Gambling Act, which prohibits operating or participating in unlicensed gambling activities
Those named include Nikhil Jatav of Mangolpuri, Gaurav Maggo of Kirti Nagar, and Himanshu Arora of Ashok Nagar, all from Delhi.
Local residents such as Umesh Rawat, Chandrashekhar and Jeevan Sharma were also apprehended, along with Keshav alias Bablu Singh Dhami from Nepal.
Police confirmed they are currently investigating the suspects’ financial records and bank accounts to determine the scale and frequency of the operation.
