Macau: DSEC releases 2024 Gaming Sector Survey; receipts rise 23%

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has released findings from its 2024 Gaming Sector Survey, showing a gradual recovery of the industry. Total sector receipts, including gaming and related activities, increased by 23.1% year-on-year to MOP231.45bn ($28.70bn).

Total expenditure for the sector, excluding taxes, rose by 18% to MOP94.37bn. Operating expenses and purchases, commissions and customer rebates increased by 28% year-on-year, while employee compensation rose by 7.0% to MOP21.48bn. Non-operating expenses, including interest and depreciation, decreased by 9.6% to MOP9.1bn.

Operating expenses grew across several categories. Expenditure on complementary goods and services, including hotel accommodation and food and beverages, totalled MOP25.58bn, up 31.1% from 2023.

Management and contractual services rose by 29.4% to MOP6.99bn, while market research and publicity expenses increased 28% to MOP2.67bn. Gross surplus before taxes rose 24.7% year-on-year to MOP143.12bn.

In 2024, nine enterprises operated gaming activities, with one ceasing operations during the year. At the end of 2024, the sector included six gaming concessionaires and two lottery operators. Data from hotel, retail and other non-gaming businesses within these enterprises are not included.

The DSEC survey’s data on gaming sector growth provides context for the Macau United Citizens Association’s recent push for improved worker protections and higher local employment in the industry.
