BCLC to offer single-event sports betting after legalisation

On Wednesday, the Senate in Canada had its third and final reading of Bill C-218, passing the law to legalise single-event sports wagering in the country.

Once it receives royal assent, PlayNow.com will be able to offer single-event sports betting, through the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC).

The company says it is “gearing up to offer single-event sports bets and bets on racing and fighting on PlayNow.com.”

If the bill does receive royal assent, single-event sports betting will be legalised in Canada and the BCLC will enable PlayNow.com players to wager on the outcome of single games or matches.

Lynda Cavanaugh, BCLC’s Interim President and CEO, said: “This is a huge win for PlayNow.com players and British Columbians overall.

“We’re excited to soon provide our players these new offerings on PlayNow.com, which is B.C’s only legal gambling website and delivers important revenue back to the Province of B.C, to support things like healthcare, education and community programs.”

The BCLC says it will continue prioritising the health of players, such as identifying player behaviours associated with risk or problem gambling levels.

PlayNow.com offers players the chance to speak to health specialists via telephone or online chat; players can be referred to treatment and external support services if needed.

The BCLC will continue exploring opportunities where it can offer single-event sports betting across land-based venues like casinos or hospitality locations in British Columbia.
