It’s a done deal: Marcus Boyle appointed as Chairman of the Gambling Commission
Marcus Boyle has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Gambling Commission by The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, The Rt Hon Oliver Dowden MP.Boyle's five-year term commences in September 2021 and he will be taking over the role from Bill Moyes, whose five-year term as Chairman of the gambling watchdog comes to an end this year.
Boyle is a former board member at accountancy firm Deloitte, is Chairman of the British American Drama Academy and is a trustee of the Serpentine Gallery. This role helped his application as the new Chairman of the Gambling Commission, with his new position seen as “a positive for the betting industry,” according to the Racing Post.
As the job itself is unanimously known as a tough role to tackle, filling this position comes with great respect. However, some have suggested the role should be filled by a candidate with gambling and gaming experience under their belt.
Brigid Simmonds, Betting & Gaming Council (BGC) Chairman, however, said: “I would like to congratulate Marcus Boyle and warmly welcome him to his new role.
“As part of our continued commitment to ever-higher standards on safer gambling, the BGC will continue to work with the Gambling Commission, as well as with the Government on their evidence-led Gambling Review.
“I would also like to thank Marcus’ predecessor Bill Moyes for working with us over the last two years and wish him well for the future.”
The regulator has come under intense scrutiny over its failure to adhere to tackling responsible gambling and is currently providing input into the ongoing Government review of the Gambling Act.
