KSA dismantles illegal poker tournaments and seizes tens of thousands of Euros

Key points:

– The KSA dismantled illegal poker tournaments in six Dutch cities, seizing large amounts of cash

– A penalty payment order of up to €110,000 was imposed on an organiser of unlicensed poker

The Dutch Gaming Authority (KSA) has taken action against illegal poker tournaments across the Netherlands, dismantling multiple operations and seizing tens of thousands of euros in cash.

The enforcement efforts, carried out in the autumn of 2024, included six raids in cities such as Amsterdam, Asten, The Hague, Rotterdam and Tilburg – often in collaboration with local municipalities and police forces.

In one instance, authorities discovered €40,000 ($43,000) in cash at a tournament venue, highlighting the significant sums involved in unregulated poker games.

The KSA has linked illegal poker tournaments to organised crime, stating that such events can serve as platforms for criminal activity, including money laundering.

Additionally, the lack of regulatory oversight raises concerns about gambling addiction, particularly in high-stakes environments where players may be at increased risk.

Good to know: Under Dutch law, Holland Casino is the only entity authorised to organise poker tournaments where money can be won. Outside of this, such events are only permitted within a strictly defined “closed circle,” such as among family members, colleagues or members of an association

In response to these concerns, the KSA has imposed a penalty payment order of up to €110,000 on an organiser of an illegal poker event – a measure intended to deter further unlicensed poker operations and prevent repeated violations.

The authority has also announced plans to intensify its enforcement measures, working closely with law enforcement agencies and local governments while also conducting independent actions.
