Key points:
- Suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s licence now set for 30 September 2025
- Special Manager’s oversight extended for the same period
- Brisbane venue also remains under advisory monitoring
The Star Entertainment Group has been given some extra time by the Queensland Government, with the suspension of its Gold Coast casino licence now pushed back to the end of September.
The delay follows advice from the appointed Special Manager, Nicholas Weeks, who acknowledged that while The Star had made some headway on its remediation plan, certain areas still need work. The suspension had been due to start from 31 March, but the Government agreed the extra six months could help the operator meet the outstanding requirements.
Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said that, while the Government had taken recent progress into account, it would not be lowering its expectations. “The Star must continue to show it is serious about change. This deferral gives them a bit more time, but we will not hesitate to step in if needed,” she said.
The role of the Special Manager has been extended to the same date, giving continued independent oversight of the casino’s operations. The Government also confirmed that an External Advisor will remain in place at The Star Brisbane until 30 September too.
Steve McCann, Group CEO of The Star, said the company appreciated the decision and would keep working to meet its obligations. His remarks were fairly brief and acknowledged the seriousness of the task ahead.
The Attorney-General made clear that this extension does not mean the Government is stepping away. There is still a long way to go and both venues will stay under close watch as the group works through its regulatory challenges.
