California AG confirms enforcement coming against fantasy sports operators

Key points:

– California Attorney General Rob Bonta reaffirmed that daily fantasy sports platforms violate state law

– Bonta confirmed his office “absolutely” plans to enforce the law

– The comment follows a formal legal opinion stating fantasy sports constitutes as illegal gambling

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has announced that enforcement actions are forthcoming against fantasy sports platforms operating in violation of state law in the state.

The statement was made during a live interview, which is the first time Bonta addressed the issue on camera since California’s Department of Justice’s issued a formal legal opinion earlier this month against fantasy sports, classifying them as illegal under state law.

Bonta elaborated saying: “It is a violation of the law, as our legal opinion has indicated, to provide a platform in the state of California to get to California consumers for the daily fantasy sports at issue.

“Laws are meant to be enforced and we expect our legal opinion to be followed and complied with.”

Good to know: SPGA, ACLU and other groups have united in opposition to California’s anti-daily fantasy sports bill mentioning concerns over consumer freedom and government overreach

Bonta’s comments and the legal opinions now shift the fantasy sports debate from legal interpretation to compliance and enforcement.

Until now, those platforms have continued to operate in a legal grey zone despite pressure from lawmakers and regulators.

When asked if enforcement could be expected from his office, Bonta responded directly: “Absolutely.”
