Malaysia police uncover gambling dens posing as shops
Illegal syndicates operated behind retail facades, court action already taken.
Key Points:
– 10 illegal gambling premises identified in Kuantan since January
– Syndicates disguised operations as retail and phone repair shops
– Ten suspects, including staff, have been charged in court
As reported by The Vibes, police in Kuantan have dismantled a network of illegal gambling syndicates operating under the guise of legitimate businesses, including convenience stores and mobile phone repair shops.
The crackdown followed raids on ten premises across the district, including Semambu, which were found to be offering online gambling services and unlicensed lottery betting.
These actions, led by Kuantan’s Deputy District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud, are part of ongoing efforts to tackle illicit gambling under “Ops Mega,” carried out in cooperation with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).
10 individuals, including caretakers and employees, have been charged in court. Police have warned that further enforcement is expected, with other suspected locations already identified.
Good to know: Power to the affected premises has been cut under Section 21A of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 to prevent illegal operations from resuming after court proceedings
Superintendent Adli stated that the disconnection of electricity is intended as a preventive measure, making it more difficult for illegal gambling activities to resume. He also stressed that strong legal action will be taken against anyone involved, regardless of their social status or business cover.
Members of the public, particularly youth, have been urged to stay away from gambling and to report any suspicious activity. Authorities highlighted the financial and emotional toll gambling can inflict on individuals and families.
