Floridians favour voter approval for casino gambling decisions

Florida’s politicians could be set to require voter approval of casino gambling decisions after a new poll suggests 71% of residents are in favour of amending the state’s law.

If passed, politicians in Florida would have to seek voter approval for casino gambling expansions, including internet sweepstakes and video lottery terminals, as well as electronic and simulated gambling.

The poll saw 1,209 interviews conducted from 18 July to 24 July, with participants asked the same exact question that will appear on the November ballot.

John Sowinski, president of the Voters in Charge committee, said: “We start in a uniquely strong position. The simplicity of the amendment is its strength. Amendment 3 asks the simple question. Who do you trust: Florida voters, or the politicians and the lobbyists who influence them?’”

Two of the largest donators to the Voters in Charge committee are none other than Disney Worldwide Services and the Seminole Tribe who are both looking to protect their own interest in Florida.

Disney contributed over $9.6m to prevent the state’s child-friendly image from being tarnished, while the Seminole Tribe has given over $6.7m to maintain its monopoly on the state’s gambling industry.

A total of 60% of voters must support changing the state’s constitution for the amendment to be approved, meaning that if the poll is correct, it should have no trouble being passed.
