Gambling Commission launches National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms

A three-year strategy has been launched by the Gambling Commission to reduce gambling harm in Great Britain.

The Commission’s National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms aims to bring together health bodies, charities, regulators and business to tackle the issue.

William Moyes, Chairman of the Gambling Commission, said: "The success of this strategy relies on everyone working together to reduce gambling harms through prevention and education, and treatment and support."

In prevention and education, the regulator wants to make significant progress towards a clear public health prevention plan with a mix of interventions.

In treatment and support, it says it will deliver national treatment and support options meeting the needs of users.

Minister for Sport and Civil Society Mims Davies commented: "Through increased research, education and treatment I want to see faster progress made in tackling this issue (of gambling related harms)."

Marc Etches, CEO of GambleAware, said: "Last year, 30,000 people received advice from the National Gambling Helpline and 9,000 people were treated via a national network of providers we fund.

"However, less than 3% of the reported number of problem gamblers access services so it is clear there is much more to be done in raising awareness about this serious public health issue."

A report comparing the efforts of the Commission to regulators in Malta and Nevada will be published in Gambling Insider’s July/August magazine. Sign up free here to read the article when published.
