ORG launches new awareness campaign in Ohio as sports betting debut looms
By Matthew Nicholson

As part of ORG’s 'Get Set Before You Bet' gambling education push, 'Pause Before You Play' is the organisation's latest effort to ensure Ohio citizens are educated about the dangers of problem gambling.

Amanda Blackford, Director of Operations and Problem Gambling Services, Ohio Casino Control Commission, said of the move: "In other states that preceded Ohio in legalising sports betting, we've seen higher interest and more struggles with problem gambling. We want people to have fun and be responsible."

Meanwhile, Derek Longmeier, Executive Director of Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, added: "The challenges of problem gambling go far beyond the person placing a bet. Families, children, and businesses all face consequences with a person's gambling addiction.

"The majority of Ohioans who gamble will stay within their limits. As sports betting grows exponentially in 2023, it makes sense that we will see more challenges here in Ohio."

In the lead-up to Ohio officially launching sports betting, many sportsbooks have prepared by offering customers significant deals to sign up for their services.

UK operator bet365 offered customers $100 in free bets if they registered before 1 December 2023 and an additional $200 in free bets, so long as bettors deposit $10 and wager $1.

In a statement, bet365 said of the promotional offer: “Ahead of our launch on 1 January, bet365 is pleased to provide this early sign-up offer for sports fans across Ohio. Ohio has such a rich sporting history, and bet365 is proud to be a part of it."
