Allwyn officially acquires Camelot's UK Lottery Solutions Group
By Matthew Nicholson

Allwyn stated that no changes are planned to the leadership of the Camelot LS Group, which will be integrated into its UK lottery operations when the company takes over the licence.

The story brings another chapter to a close in the long-running Allwyn Camelot saga, as the latter attempted to stop Allwyn from being awarded the Fourth National Lottery Licence in court, after Camelot was beaten in the race for the licence.

The move to Allwyn marks the first time since its inception in 1994 that the UK National Lottery will be operated by another company, with Camelot winning the previous three licences.

When Allwyn was awarded the Fourth Licence in 2022, Camelot immediately attempted to stop the handover from taking place in the UK courts, challenging the Gambling Commission’s decision and bringing about a legal challenge that came to an end late last year.

However, IGT, Camelot’s technology partner, has refused to give up the chase for compensation and sued the Gambling Commission in January 2023, saying the decision to award the fourth lottery licence to the Czech-owned Allwyn gaming group had cost it “marketable goodwill.”

When Allwyn announced its intention to purchase Camelot’s LS Group, it marked a move that few would have seen coming when Camelot attempted to wrestle control of the Fourth National Lottery Licence back under its control.

The Gambling Commission cleared the purchase of Camelot’s LS Group earlier this year, with the CEO of Allwyn, Robert Chvátal, saying: “Acquiring Camelot will help ensure a smooth transition from the Third to the Fourth Licence while bringing together the collective expertise and technical know-how of two highly experienced lottery operators.”
