Nicola Zalewski named as latest footballer in Serie A betting probe
By Gambling Insider

According to local media, Nicola Zalewski is the latest footballer to be implicated in the betting probe that has already caught out several Serie A footballers.

Zalewski is a full-back for Serie A club Roma, while also playing for the Polish national team.

Prior to being named as part of the scandal, it was also reported by the Roma Press that Zalewski was returning to the Polish U21 Squad after dealing with a number of “personal and professional problems.”

While Serie A athletes are allowed to participate in sports betting, it cannot be on their own sport and the websites they use have to be legal to use.

The investigation started with Nicolò Fagioli, an Italian football player who plays for both Juventus and the Italian national team.

Reportedly, Fagioli could have broken federal laws by betting on illegal platforms.

Although not too many details have been released at the time of writing, if he’s found guilty then he could face a fine of at least €25,000 ($26,507) and a three-year ban.

However, Fagioli wasn’t the only footballer under scrutiny, as it was found that Italian footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo are also being investigated by the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office.

As such, both players have been dropped from the Italian national squad and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has released a statement explaining that this is because the players are not in the right condition to play in the upcoming matches.
