Date: 7–9 March 2017 and 30 May–1 June 2017 Where: Hippodrome Casino, London, UK Time: 10:00–18:00

Event: Sports Betting Academy

This year Totally Gaming Academy is bringing back the Sports Betting Academy for its fourth consecutive year. The intensive three day training course for sports betting professional is a must for those wanting to expand their knowledge in the highly competitive industry, whilst networking in a fun and stimulating environment. Gambling Insider talks to Jonathan Smith, Sports Betting Academy consultant, about the upcoming event and what it has in store for attendees.

Why is this event essential for those wanting to expand their knowledge in this industry?

This is the go-to course for existing and aspiring odds trading staff who want to differentiate themselves from an already crowded market place. In an age where modern technology is complementing and, in many cases, replacing more traditional techniques, it is imperative that staff understand modern day bookmaking practice.

What do you hope to achieve with this event? What will attendees gain?

This is the 4th Sports Betting Academy. As always, I want students to walk away knowing they have learnt something of value. Too often, training is undertaken for training’s sake. I’d like to think we are teaching people the skills that are fit for today’s trading floor.

Can you give us more of an idea about the trends and issues that will be discussed?

In addition to a traditional understanding of probability, we will be looking at applying our minds to modern day innovations such as cashout, simulation and data modelling, as well as looking at the markets used by sportsbooks to distinguish themselves from their competitors.

Can you tell us a bit about the trainers?

Jonathan Smith is a 25+ year veteran of the industry, with a background in odds compiling for major bookmakers. He has been the architect of several successful training courses for firms around the world; Dr Ian McHale of Salford University is the country’s leading football statistician, widely known for his sports forecasting models; Anthony Gray is a senior football and cricket trader, with many years of success in trading pre-match and in-play sports; Paul Twomey is a senior modeller at Sportcast, who create bespoke trading products for bookmakers.

What networking opportunities are available for attendees?

There will be a dinner for all attendees on the 7th March, taking place at the Hippodrome. We try to do this at each of our courses as it is a great way for attendees to meet their fellow attendees, network and encourages sharing whilst at the course too.

One thing we are really proud of at the Totally Gaming Academy is that we have students attend from all over the world! This enables all attendees to hear about ideas they may not necessarily have thought of.
