Cannabis and casinos back on the table in Las Vegas
On Wednesday this week, the 12-member Nevada Gaming Policy Committee are set to meet to discuss the state’s budding cannabis industry and what it means for the casino industry.
As it stands, the Federal Government’s stance on marijuana continues to be a pretty stringent one. It is still considered a banned substance, with Nevada gaming regulators warning casino operators not to get involved with the industry at this time.
The reason for the meeting will be to “gather information, engage in discussion, and provide recommendations on policies related to the potential interactions” between casino licensees and the cannabis industry.
In September, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced that he was resurrecting the issue, stating: “Gaming regulators have been clear on the prohibition of marijuana consumption on licensed gaming properties but there are additional policy considerations such as industry events and business relationships that should be contemplated,” Sandoval said in a statement.
The meeting will take place in Las Vegas at the Clark County Government Center, with the board including MGM Resorts CEO, Jim Murren, Boyd Gaming CEO, Keith Smith, Gaming Control Board Chairman, A.G. Burnett and Gaming Commission Chairman, Tony Alamo.
