Casino workers’ union protests re-openings
The casino workers’ Culinary Union organised a protest on the Las Vegas Strip in light of casino companies releasing plans to re-open. The protest also aimed to highlight safety protocol recommendations the union is proposing as well as a request for casino companies to release the same information they’re sending to regulators. This includes data on re-opening plans, safety regulations, and any other data that involves the resumed operations.
The protest drive was to go from the union headquarters to the iconic Las Vegas sign.
Governor Steve Sisolak allowed the Nevada Gaming Control Board to decide when the re-openings would happen. Together with the Nevada Gaming Commission, which is in charge of regulations and licensing, the Board approves the rules for resumed work. This includes disinfecting equipment, spacing out guests and limiting visitors.
However, the union demands more comprehensive and detailed plans to be released. Among them were COVID-19 tests for staff, checking temperature upon entry, and a request to include proposed rules as part of re-opening regulations.
Some casinos have already released their re-opening plans. MGM Resorts plans its re-opening in phases, with the Bellagio and New York-New York as first of the 13 MGM properties to re-open in Las Vegas.
