City of Dreams Manila’s soft reopening

City of Dreams Manila is preparing for a soft reopening after being closed since 15 March. The company reportedly is testing staff for COVID-19 and offering housing on site. There are also changes to the gaming floors, such as a limit of three players at one gaming table. The relaunch will depend on approval from the Philippine government.

“The wellbeing of our colleagues is our paramount concern, more so in these fragile times,” said chief operating officer Kevin Benning. The venue will implement strict safety protocols, such as thermal screening, sanitation mats and mandatory masks, and slot machines will be spaced at least one metre apart. Restaurants will also operate at 50% capacity.

Benning assured the company has been consulting with PAGCOR, the Department of Health and the Parañaque Health Office to fully comply with health standards and government guidelines, even going beyond basic requirements where possible to ensure “a safe environment for the health and well-being of City of Dreams Manila’s guests and colleagues”.

City of Dreams is run by Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd, but other companies have invested interest as well. Belle Corp reported the Q1 share of gaming revenue was PHP445.04 million ($8.8 million), about a 37% year-on-year drop for the first quarter. Total quarterly revenues for Belle Corp dropped 25% to PHP1.42 billion.

The complex’s soft re-opening could help elevate the pressure Melco and associated companies are facing after a difficult first quarter.
