GLK casinos in Seoul resume work after months of closure
South Korea’s foreigner-only casino operator Grand Korea Leisure Co (GKL) opened its venues in Seoul.
Seven Luck and Gangbuk Hilton properties were shut down since 24 November after the country tightened pandemic safety regulations in the capital.
While the social distancing measures in the city remain at Level 2, the authorities have allowed public casinos to resume work at 20% capacity.
The decision was taken to support public casinos after their temporary closures, and boost them to the same level as private casinos that didn’t have to close their doors because of social distancing measures.
GGRAsia reported the Seven Luck casino in Gangnam district limits daily guests to 185 versus daily 925 capacity, while Gangbuk Hilton placed the limit of 148 against the usual 740.
Seoul casinos are not the only ones to suffer the effects of the pandemic. South Korea’s casino industry as a whole was affected and the Jeju casino workers’ union stated it will fight for the rights of employees. Jeju News reported the union held a press conference and promised to work on improving the treatment of casino workers.
“With the rapid drop in foreign tourists due to Covid-19, three of the eight casinos in Jeju Island have already been shut down, and the rest are enduring difficult times,” said the union. “Casino workers also have a hard time living due to long-term paid leave.”
