South Korean casinos continue to be impacted by Covid-19 pandemic
Kangwon Land, the only casino in South Korea catering to local players, recently announced it would temporarily close its casino from 16-18 August after an outbreak of Covid-19 was detected among its staff.
A total of 20 cases have been confirmed, with seven of them casino employees, reports GGRAsia.
After the first cases were detected, the casino reduced the number of operational gaming tables from 113 to 78 and dropped the number of daily visitors from 5,000 to 4,000. Jeongseon county, where the casino is located, tightened its social distancing measures, and if the property is to re-open as planned, the casino would have to work to a 30% capacity.
Kangwon Land is not the only casino to halt its operations. Paradise Casino Walkerhill will be shut down until 17 August after it was confirmed guests with positive Covid-19 cases visited the venue on several occasions. However, the exact number of active cases is not known.
Elsewhere, casino resort operator Landing International Development Ltd has issued a profit warning, stating the company expects a 15-35% dip in consolidated net loss for the six months ended June 30, compared to 2020, when the company reported a loss of HKD2.12bn ($272m). Consolidated revenue should see an 80% increase.
Gaming-related revenue should see a decline of between 15-35%. South Korea currently has restrictions on foreign travel, which puts further strain on the country’s casinos, as most of them are allowed to cater to foreign players only.
