New GambleAware study reveals impact cost of living has on women
GambleAware has revealed new research that suggests the cost-of-living crisis could lead to a rise in problem gambling among women.
The gambling charity has revealed its new analysis, which alleged that 24% of women aged 18-49 that already gamble expect to gamble more in the coming months because of the problems caused by high inflation.
Meanwhile, one in 10 women that gamble have turned to the industry to supplement household income, and one in five have experienced mental health disorders due to stress and anxiety.
Zoë Osmond, Chief Executive of GambleAware, said of the findings: “This new research raises serious concerns over the potential growth in the scale of gambling harm over the coming months. With such a stark warning sign, it is vital we help ensure more women are aware of the risks of gambling.
“As financial hardships accelerate amid the cost-of-living crisis, and the number of women gambling online increases, we are concerned it is creating a perfect storm, which may lead to a rise in the number of women experiencing gambling harm.”
In attempting to aid the problem, GambleAware has launched a new campaign aimed at raising awareness for women that are vulnerable to the effects of problem gambling, as well as those that may be struggling.
The latest survey was based on findings from over 1,600 women that gamble, and many raised the issue of stigma towards women – with 49% revealing that the shame of gambling kept them from speaking to a family member about gambling concerns.
Osmond further added on the issue of stigma: “We must break down the pervasive stigma that prevents too many women from seeking out vital support.
