Kalshi Geofencing, Earnings, NFL Preseason Lead Gambling Stories to Watch This Week
Michigan and Nevada are set to become the first two states to force Kalshi to geofence its platform, marking a new phase in the fight over prediction market sports contracts.
Prediction markets continue to drive the gambling industry news this week, with enforcement measures taking effect in Michigan and Nevada, court conferences scheduled in Illinois and further filings possible across several states. Elsewhere, Entain and Evoke report results as football begins to reclaim attention.
Here are the gambling stories to watch this week:
Prediction Market Deadlines and Court Battles
Kalshi Faces Aug. 12 Geofencing Deadlines
Kalshi is up against matching geofencing deadlines in Michigan and Nevada on Wednesday, as state courts enforce restrictions on its event contracts.
In Michigan, Kalshi must implement geofencing or potentially face fines of $500,000 per day. The company faces the same deadline in Nevada after reaching an agreement with the Nevada Gaming Control Board in late July. If it fails to implement GeoComply geofencing, Kalshi faces a $120,000-per-day penalty.
What to watch:
Whether Kalshi implements the required geofencing in Nevada and Michigan by Wednesday or seeks further relief before the deadlines.
Illinois Prediction Market Cases Return to Court
Illinois is also in focus, with telephone conferences scheduled in two prediction market cases this week.
The first comes on Tuesday in the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) lawsuit against the state. The federal regulator is challenging Illinois’ enforcement efforts against prediction markets and the newly-passed tax on sports event contracts.
A second conference is scheduled for Friday in Coinbase’s lawsuit against state officials.
What to watch:
Any new briefing schedules, hearing dates or other indications of how the two federal challenges will proceed after this week’s conferences.
New York, Utah and Novig Could Bring More Court Filings
Legal developments are likely in other states.
New York remains one of the busiest prediction market battlegrounds. After Kalshi removed the Attorney General’s lawsuit to federal court, the state has moved to remand the case back to the New York County Supreme Court.
The remand motion will be decided by U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres, who previously rejected Kalshi’s attempt to block New York from enforcing its gambling laws.
Utah is another state to watch. After U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby granted summary judgment to the state last week, Kalshi filed an emergency motion seeking an injunction preventing Utah from enforcing its gambling laws while the company pursues an appeal.
Meanwhile, Novig has expanded its legal offensive just days after launching its prediction market platform. Late last week, the company sued New York, Massachusetts, New Mexico and Washington.
What to watch:
Updates in New York or Utah, further lawsuits by Novig, or developments in other states.
Prediction Markets’ Response to CFTC Odds Warning
Changes could be coming to multiple prediction market exchanges.
On Friday, the CFTC reminded regulated platforms that event contracts should be presented as exchange-traded derivatives rather than sportsbook wagers.
The agency specifically warned against displaying prices using American odds, such as +150 or -200, saying the format is “likely to mislead market participants about the nature of the transaction.”
The CFTC also cautioned that misleading pricing displays could violate federal law.
What to watch:
Whether and how prediction market operators adjust their interfaces in response to the CFTC’s warning over American-style odds.
Evoke and Entain Lead This Week’s Earnings Calendar
Earnings season continues this week with Evoke reporting interim results on Wednesday, followed by Entain on Thursday.
For Evoke, the results come just days before shareholders vote Aug. 17 on Bally’s Intralot’s proposed acquisition of the William Hill and 888 owner.
Entain’s results follow a mixed second-quarter update from BetMGM, its 50/50 joint venture with MGM Resorts. The company now expects both revenue and adjusted EBITDA to be toward the lower end of 2026 guidance ranges, with management citing prediction market competition as one of the pressures on sports betting.
Bally’s is also worth watching. While the company has not announced an earnings date on its investor calendar, it could report as early as this week.
What to watch:
Evoke’s outlook ahead of the takeover vote, Entain’s commentary on BetMGM and prediction markets, and updates from Bally’s.
NFL Betting Returns; Bally’s and Sweepstakes Stories Develop
NFL Preseason Brings Football Back to Sportsbooks
The NFL preseason technically began last week with the Hall of Fame Game, but football betting starts to become much more prominent this week. Preseason Week 1 runs from Aug. 13 through Aug. 15, bringing the first full slate of games across the league.
While MLB remains the primary daily betting attraction in mid-August, the return of the NFL marks the transition toward the most important part of the U.S. sports calendar. With this being the first football season since the arrival of prediction markets, 2026 is shaping up as particularly intriguing
What to watch:
Sportsbook promotions, prediction markets’ customer acquisition efforts and betting interest as the NFL begins to take attention away from MLB ahead of the regular season.
Bally’s Chicago VGT Dispute Escalates
As investors and analysts await second-quarter earnings, Bally’s added another complication to the development of its permanent Chicago casino.
The company said it is “resetting the pace of construction” on parts of the River West project amid a dispute over Chicago’s move toward allowing VGTs in bars and restaurants.
Bally’s argues that a proliferation of VGTs violates the city’s commitments under its Host Community Agreement and could hurt the casino’s prospects. The company hired former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s law firm earlier this year in connection with a possible lawsuit against the city.
For now, Bally’s says the planned opening of the permanent casino remains “unchanged for early 2027.”
What to watch:
Whether Bally’s further delays construction, Chicago changes course on VGTs, or the dispute escalates into litigation.
Sweepstakes Casinos: LuckyStake Prepares to Shut Down
Another sweepstakes casino is set to close this week as the sector faces a shrinking U.S. market due to regulatory efforts. LuckyStake will end gameplay, coin bundle purchases and its Alternative Method of Entry program on Aug. 14 as part of a phased shutdown.
Players will then have until 11:59 p.m. ET on Aug. 20 to submit prize redemption requests. Redemptions submitted before the deadline can continue through the review process after the platform goes offline.
The closure comes amid continued pressure and consolidation in the sweepstakes casino sector and follows VGW’s recent announcement that it will wind down LuckyLand Slots. In the past few months, several platforms, including Mega Frenzy, Betty Sweeps, Sweep Next, Grand Vault and Gold Treasure, have shut down.
What to watch:
LuckyStake’s shutdown and ease of redemption, and whether other sweepstakes operators announce exits as regulatory pressure continues.
