Star Entertainment fined AU$140,000 after pleading guilty to 11 charges
The incidents happened between 2017-2022.
Star Entertainment has been fined AU$140,000 (US$92,000) following an investigation by the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) in Queensland. The fine was issued for allowing customers to illegally use credit cards to purchase gambling chips at both its Brisbane and Gold Coast casinos.
The operator pleaded guilty to 11 charges in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
Seven of the charges relate to accepting credit wagers of more than AU$170,000 between 2017 and 2022. The Star was also ordered to pay AU$3,250 in court costs.
The other four charges are related to sending promotional material to self-excluded customers.
The Brisbane Magistrates Court heard that a lack of adequate controls in relation to the card machines meant customers could use their credit cards to deposit significant amounts of money into their casino account, potentially allowing customers to gamble beyond their means.
A spokesperson for Star Entertainment said: “We are absolutely focused on improving and returning to suitability in Queensland and NSW, with the goal of earning back the trust of our regulators, governments, shareholders, team members, guests and community.”
Yvette D’Ath, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, stated: “Palaszczuk Government expects all Queensland casinos to operate lawfully and ethically.
“Allowing credit betting and distributing promotional material to excluded persons are not acceptable ways for casinos to operate in Queensland.
“The authority to operate a casino is a privilege. In return, the community expects The Star, at an absolute minimum, to effectively control risks, such as gambling harm and money laundering.”
