FIBA and Genius Sports extend partnership until 2035

FIBA, the global basketball governing body, has announced an extension of its partnership with Genius Sports, a move that will mark a significant development in the integration of AI-powered technology in basketball.

FIBA and Genius Sports extend partnership until 2035

The partnership, set to span from 2025 to 2035, will see Genius Sports introducing its technology to leagues and national federations worldwide. The AI-powered tools are designed to automate crucial processes including official data collection, live video production and optical player tracking.

The new technology will also augment broadcasting capabilities, creating an interconnected solution for live game statistics and video production. As part of this, Genius Sports’ optical system – trained to interpret live game plays and predict outcomes in real-time – is designed to transform raw data and video into actionable game insights.

One final noteworthy feature of this collaboration is the introduction of an AI-powered player-tracking system. This technology aims to provide leagues and national federations with access to advanced coaching tools, analytics and automated officiating.

Andreas Zagklis, FIBA Secretary General, stated: “For almost 20 years, FIBA and Genius Sports have joined forces in developing the most innovative tools for leagues and national federations across all levels of basketball.

“Through this automated solution, our objective is to assist national federations and leagues to increase their reach and revenue and at the same time, reduce costs. We’re delighted to expand our partnership with Genius Sports to achieve this goal and equip the FIBA Family with first access to this cutting-edge technology in basketball.”

Mark Locke, Genius Sports CEO, added: “We’re thrilled to expand our landmark partnership with FIBA, equipping leagues and national federations with state-of-the-art technology to transform how their fans, coaches, officials, broadcasters and sponsors interact with live data and video.

“Powered by our unique AI-driven system, leagues and national federations at all levels of basketball will be able to automate data and video collection and utilise the highest quality player and team tracking data.”

Under the terms of the extended agreement, Genius Sports will serve as FIBA’s Official Data and Video Capture and Production Partner, and the governing body’s Official Innovation and Technology Services Partner until 2035.
