Reading’s Head of Operations charged by FA for alleged betting breaches

The Football Association has charged Reading FC’s Head of Football Operations, Mark Bowen, in relation to breaches of the governing bodies betting rules.

It has been alleged that the former professional footballer placed 95 bets on football matches between April 2022 and January 2024, though it is stated that none of these bets were related to Reading themselves.

The FA have given Bowen until 7 June to respond to the charge.

In the statement released on the FA Spokesperson X (formerly Twitter) account, it read: “Reading’s Head of Football Operations has been charged with misconduct in relation to breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

“Mark Bowen allegedly placed 95 bets on football matches, which were unrelated to Reading, between 19 April 2022 and 14 January 2024. Mark Bowen has until Friday 7 June to respond.”

This marks yet another FA charge related to betting which has happened this month.

West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta was charged last week by the FA for alleged breaches of betting rules related to intentionally trying to get booked by the referee in four separate Premier League fixtures.

While this week, Swansea City’s Player Liaison Officer Huw Lake was suspended by the FA from all football and football-related activity for 12 months and given a fine of £1,500 ($1,911) for betting-related misconduct, having allegedly placed 2,476 bets on football matches between 3 April 2018 and 24 September 2023.
