Massachusetts introduces official seal for licensed online sportsbooks

Key points:

– MGC now requires all licensed online sports betting operators in Massachusetts to display an official seal of approval

– The seal indicates the platform is licensed and regulated by the state, offering consumer protections

– The move aims to help consumers distinguish legal, regulated sportsbooks from illegal, offshore operators

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has launched a new official seal to help consumers identify licensed, regulated online sportsbooks within the state.

This emblem, which licensed operators are required to display on their digital platforms, will signify that a sportsbook is legally authorised by the MGC, ensuring it meets Massachusetts’ standards for consumer protection, data security and responsible gambling practices.

The seal is part of the MGC’s broader efforts to promote safe and regulated gaming options in Massachusetts, allowing residents to distinguish legitimate services from potentially harmful unlicensed sites.

Seven licensed online sportsbooks currently operate in Massachusetts, each adhering to the state’s regulatory requirements, including Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols to verify eligibility and protect user data.

The new seal hopes to offer consumers a quick, reliable way to identify legal betting platforms.

Commenting on the seal’s introduction, MGC Commissioner Eileen O’Brien stated: “The MGC has spent considerable efforts ensuring that the operators licensed in the Commonwealth share our values and are committed to consumer protections and responsible gaming.

“Massachusetts residents who choose to gamble on sports deserve to know their data, personal and financial information are protected, and only the legal marketplace offers those protections. By locating this seal, users will be able to easily identify a legal sportsbook from an illegal operator.”
