Somalia’s Puntland State issues ban on 1xBet operations

Key points:

– Puntland President issued an executive decree banning the 1xBet online betting app

– The ban cites social and economic concerns, including family breakdowns and capital flight

– Debate surrounds the presidency’s role, with some suggesting the Telecommunications Ministry should have led the initiative

The Puntland State of Somalia has officially banned the use of the 1xBet app for online betting and gambling following an executive decree issued by President Said Abdullahi Deni.

The app, widely utilised within the state, has been linked to social and economic concerns, including capital flight and family disruptions.

The decree directs telecommunications companies operating in Puntland – Golis, Somtel and Amtel – not to create new accounts associated with 1xBet services and to close any existing accounts used for betting and gambling purposes.

However, these companies have yet to show compliance with the directive.

Good to know: The development has prompted debate about the proper governmental authority for implementing gambling regulations

This move follows a call for action earlier this month by Abdiqani Farah Dhaashane, a Puntland Member of Parliament, who advocated for stricter measures to curb unregulated online betting.

Dhaashane highlighted the negative consequences of 1xBet’s operations, particularly among younger users, and questioned the telecommunications companies’ roles in enabling these services.

The executive decree has sparked debate within Puntland’s political landscape. While some lawmakers view the decision as a necessary step to address a growing issue, others argue that the presidency has overstepped its authority.

Critics suggest that the Telecommunications Ministry should have been responsible for regulating online betting and gambling, raising concerns about potential power imbalances within the state government.
