KSA demands Gamusoft stop illegal offerings or risk €280,000 weekly penalties

Key points:

– KSA has asked Gamusoft to stop offering illegal games of chance to players in the Netherlands

– The website facilitates the trading of esports items between players

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Dutch Gaming Authority, has imposed an order subject to penalty on Gamusoft, meaning that if it does not cease its illegal offerings, then it could be forced to pay €280,000 ($318,426.07) per week in penalties.

This could stack for a maximum penalty fee of €840,000.

The website in question is CSGOFast, an online skin-gambling website which facilitates real-money bets for the chance to win items for esports titles.

These ‘skins’ are usually different colour schemes for weapons, or even the weapons themselves, some of which can fetch hundreds of pounds in trading.

Good to know: Skin gambling is the process of wagering on esports items: either using these items as the wager on certain outcomes of matches or entering raffles to win the items themselves

Players can deposit money, then play in games of chance such as Hi Lo, baccarat or crash-style games to try and get more credits.

These credits can then be used in skin raffles, or be used to directly buy and trade skins between players.

During the investigation, the KSA found that players in the Netherlands could create accounts and participate in the illegal games of chance without any measures taken to prevent that participation.

As Gamusoft does not own the necessary licences to operate in the Netherlands, this is in breach of the country’s gambling laws.

It could also be argued that this form of gambling appeals to younger audiences.

A few days ago, the KSA fined another licensed operator €734,000 for failing to protect vulnerable young players on its platform.
