Chris Welch has announced on LinkedIn that he will be retiring from his role as CCO at LeoVegas.
In the post, he recalled his pre-gaming career, having held roles at Andrex, Pot Noodle and Chessington theme park. In 1999 he began his gambling career ‘as Marketing Director for Coral at the dawn of the internet,’ having been convinced to join the company by then CEO Vaughn Ashdown to join the company.
Welch played a key role at PokerStars and Partygaming during the 2000s online poker boom (something we reflected on in our 30 years of iGaming retrospective issue of Gambling Insider) and worked with industry names including Isai Scheinberg and Jim Ryan among others.
Other notable roles include his year-and-a-half stint with Catena Media that ended in the summer of 2021, which included time as VP, Sports and VP, International Division. He joined LeoVegas in 2021 as a consultant and advisor, before taking on the CCO role in September 2022.
On his time with LeoVegas, Welch wrote on LinkedIn: ‘It has been more than just a job; it’s been a defining last chapter in my executive career. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most talented, passionate and driven people in the industry with a truly unique culture established and nurtured by Co-Founder and CEO Gustaf Hagman.’
Good to know: Earlier this month, LeoVegas opened a new office in Leeds
He went on to thank several teams across LeoVegas, including ‘my C-level colleagues whose support and camaraderie made even the most challenging of days better,’ ‘my Commercial leadership team who delivered above and beyond time and time again’ and ‘our suppliers, partners and affiliates without whom we couldn’t have done what we did.’
He ended the post by stating: ‘I will remember the good times, the moments that mattered, but most of all I will remember the people who made the magic happen. Thank you to those who I have met on my journey; you all in some way helped me be a better manager and a better person.’
Welch stated that, while he will be looking out for non-executive director and consulting roles, he plans to ‘take some time out to enjoy life.’
