Malaysia police to investigate AI-altered gambling videos, says IGP

Key points:

– 28 gambling promotion cases involving influencers recorded in 2024

– Over 7,800 raids conducted and 9,460 arrests made this year

– Authorities raise concerns over legal gaps in online gambling enforcement

As reported by New Straits Times, the Royal Malaysia Police will launch investigations if any artificial intelligence (AI) edited videos promoting gambling activities are discovered.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that while most gambling-related cases this year involved static image promotions by influencers, no police reports had been filed concerning AI-generated videos.

However, he confirmed that action would be taken if such cases come to light and urged victims to lodge police reports.

Razarudin said that under the ongoing Op Dadu operation, 28 investigation papers had been opened in 2024 relating to influencer-led gambling promotions in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

Eighteen cases have been prosecuted while 10 remain under investigation.

Good to know: Police have blocked 3,785 gambling websites from 2021 to 2024. In 2024 alone, they carried out over 7,800 raids and arrested 9,460 individuals linked to illegal gambling

He noted that enforcement faces increasing challenges due to the use of encrypted platforms and rapid technological developments, which complicate the process of collecting court-admissible evidence. Furthermore, the absence of a clear legal definition for online gambling under current laws makes prosecutions more difficult.

Razarudin highlighted the outdated nature of the Betting Act 1953, which has not been amended in decades. He called for legal reforms to address modern gambling practices more effectively. He also reiterated that those involved in online gambling, whether as individuals or syndicates, will be subject to prosecution under existing laws.
