Macau GGR hits MOP 5.2bn in early June despite seasonal lull
Industry analysts cite Korean pop concert and Dragon Boat holiday as key drivers.
Key points:
– MOP 5.2bn (US$646m) in gaming revenue recorded in first 8 days of June
– Daily average down 5% from May but deemed strong for the off-peak period
– Forecasts suggest June GGR may grow 4–7% year-on-year
Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) for the first eight days of June reached MOP 5.2bn, according to research cited by Macao Daily. Despite the traditionally quieter travel season, analysts point to a stronger-than-expected performance driven by a Korean pop concert and the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
A recent report by J.P. Morgan noted that daily average revenue during this period stood at MOP 650m, slightly below the MOP 684m average recorded in May. However, for what is generally considered an off-season month, the figure was viewed as solid.
The bank projects a modest slowdown in the remaining weeks of June, with daily GGR likely falling to between MOP 600m and MOP 620m.
J.P. Morgan expects June’s full-month gaming revenue to rise 4%–7% year-on-year. This would, in turn, support second-quarter growth of approximately 3-4% compared to the same period in 2024 and a sequential increase of 1-2% from Q1 this year.
Good to know: Entertainment events such as concerts, alongside regional holidays, can provide short-term boosts to visitation and gaming activity, even during slower quarters
Macquarie’s own analysis offered a similar view, stating that average daily gaming revenue from 2 to 8 June fell 5% compared to the previous week, though remained flat year-on-year.
The firm also reported that both mass-market and VIP betting volumes declined month-on-month by around 5% and 1-3% respectively. Net win margins remained steady in the range of 2.7% to 3%.
