Spillemyndigheden breaks records blocking 178 illegal gambling sites
A site is classed as illegal if it offers gambling services with Danish language, currency or payment options available.
Key points:
– A total of 178 illegal gambling sites have been blocked in one go in Denmark
– This is a new record for the most banned in one go
The courts in Frederiksberg have ruled in favour of Spillemyndigheden, the Danish Gambling Authority, blocking 178 websites that were offering illegal gambling.
This marks the highest number of websites blocked in one go since the Gambling Authority launched this initiative in 2012.
Anders Dorph, Danish Gambling Authority Director, said: “It is, of course, frustrating that illegal gambling sites continue to appear targeting Danes.
“But I am very pleased that we have tools to find the sites and that we manage to get them blocked. In 2023, we took the initiative to have the sites blocked twice a year instead of once.
“This means that we can more quickly shut down access to sites that do not have a Danish licence and where consumers do not have the same protection as those gambling operators who have a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority.”
Good to know: Since 2012, the Authority has blocked a total of 616 sites related to illegal gambling
When the Authority identifies an illegal site, it begins the process by reaching out to the operator, explaining the issue and requesting that the business end operations.
If this is not successful, the Authority will contact internet providers and these providers will ask the courts for permission to close the sites.
This process was initially done once a year, but as numbers of illegal casinos continue to rise, the Spillemyndigheden has been bringing block lists courts twice a year.
In another initiative by the Authority, the self-exclusion programme ROFUS reached 60,000 registrants earlier this week.
