Australia blocks four more illegal gambling websites

Key points:

– Five more websites found to be operating illegally have been blocked

– ACMA has now blocked over 1,300 sites since 2019

– Consumers warned of risks of using offshore gambling operators

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has issued new directives for internet service providers to block five additional illegal online gambling and affiliate websites. The action follows investigations which found the sites were operating in breach of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

The newly blocked websites are Slot Lounge, Betzillo, FastSpin99, Spinit, and PokiesPros. These platforms were found to offer online gambling services without a licence to operate in Australia.

Website blocking is one of several enforcement tools used by the ACMA to restrict access to unauthorised gambling services. Since its first request in November 2019, the authority has blocked 1,322 sites.

Good to know: Around 220 services have withdrawn from the Australian market since tighter enforcement measures began in 2017

ACMA cautions users that illegal services often appear legitimate but typically lack key safeguards such as dispute resolution, responsible gambling tools and customer fund protection. Australians engaging with these sites may have limited recourse if funds are lost or withheld.

Consumers are urged to check the ACMA’s official register to confirm whether a wagering service is licensed to operate within Australia. The agency also provides information on how to lodge complaints about illegal websites and how to protect oneself from online gambling scams.

The authority continues to monitor the market and encourages the public to remain vigilant when choosing online betting services.
