PAGCOR donates patient transport vehicles as the Philippines hit by super typhoon
The world’s strongest storm so far this year has hit the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
Key points:
– Nine additional transport vehicles have been donated to local governments
– These will be used in day-to-day medical care as well as in disasters
– This is one of the first official responses to Super Typhoon Ragasa (Nando)
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has donated nine more patient transport vehicles to local governments.
The donation comes after the area was hit by Super Typhoon Ragasa, also known as Super Typhoon Nando in the Philippines.
The storm is currently south of Hong Kong, resulting in the temporary closure of casinos in Macau.
Recorded wind speeds have been as high as 270 km/h (165 mph), while there have been storm surges of up to three metres.
An official state of calamity was declared over Calayan, Cagayan, while the rest of the Philippines battled landslides, power outages and displaced families.
Alejandro Tengco, PAGCOR Chairman and CEO, said: “Through these vehicles, we help ensure that people living in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas can receive timely medical care.”
Good to know: At the approach of Super Typhoon Ragasa, Hong Kong raised the highest Hurricane Signal No.10 for the second time in a year, marking the first instance of this since 1964
The areas expected to receive the vehicles include Mataas na Kahoy (Batangas), Paniqui (Tarlac), Bolinao (Pangasinan), Norzagaray (Bulacan), and Bangui, Carasi, Dumalneg, Pagudpud and Adams (all in Ilocos Norte).
As many of these locations are still remote, locals may have to travel up to 100km to the closest hospital.
The vehicles are each equipped with GPS navigation systems, stretchers, oxygen tanks, wheelchairs and a first aid kit.
The regulator has already donated 60 patient transport vehicles so far this year.
