Macau casinos reopen as emergency weather response lifted

Key points:

– Emergency state lifted at 11pm on 24 September

– Ferry services between Macau and Hong Kong resumed

– Flights still affected at Macau International Airport

Macau’s casinos reopened at 2am on Thursday 25 September after the city officially lifted its emergency response to severe weather.

According to Jornal San Wa Ou, the Civil Protection Centre confirmed that the immediate prevention status had ended at 11pm the previous night under Article 9 of the Civil Protection Framework Law (Law No. 11/2020), following an Executive Order from the Chief Executive.

The Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced that venues authorised to operate gaming activities were allowed to resume business from 2am. The bureau coordinated with concessionaires to ensure smooth reopening procedures at gaming properties across the city.

Ferry services between Macau and Hong Kong resumed this morning, with the first sailings departing Sheung Wan at 7.30am and returning from both the Outer Harbour and Taipa terminals at 9.00am. However, routes between Macau and Shekou or Fuyong in Shenzhen remain suspended due to ongoing safety precautions, while services between Macau and Zhuhai’s Wanzai terminal have yet to resume.

Good to know: The emergency measures were triggered by the Super Typhoon Ragasa affecting both land and sea transport in the region

Passengers were advised by the Marine and Water Bureau to check with ferry operators for the latest ticketing and sailing updates. The Civil Aviation Authority also urged travellers to verify flight times before heading to Macau International Airport, as delays may persist.

The lifting of restrictions allows the city’s gaming and transport sectors to gradually return to normal, following the temporary disruption.
