Resorts World Genting extends closure

Resorts World Genting (RWG) has announced it will remain closed until 18 February, after the Malaysia Government extended the country’s Movement Control Order (MCO) amid the ongoing pandemic.

The flagship integrated resort of Genting Malaysia last month announced it would temporarily close its doors from 22 January until 4, with the decision coinciding with the Government’s introduction of the initial MCO. That order has now been extended, resulting in an extension to the closure period of RWG.

“Following the announcement made by the Government on 2 February 2021 to extend the Movement Control Order (MCO) until 18 February 2021, RWG will remain closed during this period,” a statement from RWG read.

“However, essential resort-based services such as security, bomba (fire and rescue), utilities and clinics will be operational.”

RWG announced last month that it would work at reduced capacity through revised opening hours and limited availability. A previous movement control measure in 2020 saw RWG and its associated non-gaming properties close from mid-March to mid-June.

The Malaysian authorities announced this week that the near-nationwide MCO would be extended, with only a handful of districts in the eastern state of Sarawak exempt from the measures. It comes amid a new spike in COVID-19 cases throughout the country.
