BGC pledges to “keep up the momentum” amid falling problem gambling rates

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) says it will “keep up the momentum” in the fight to raise standards in the regulated betting and gaming industry.

The pledge comes after a survey from the Gambling Commission showed the rate of problem gambling had declined from 0.6% in 2019 to 0.3% in 2020.

The study - based on a survey of 4,007 UK adults between March and December 2020 - showed that the rate of gamblers classed as being at ‘moderate risk’ of harm fell from 1.2% to 0.9% year-on-year.

The ‘low risk’ rate meanwhile fell from 2.7% to 2% over the same period, with the Government confirming that the problem gambling rate of 0.5% has been stable for the past 20 years.

“Since being established in 2019, we have worked tirelessly to drive up standards in the regulated betting and gaming industry and promote safer gambling,” said BGC executive director for standards and innovation Wes Himes.

“Our initiatives have included encouraging deposit limits, investing more in research, education and treatment, and introducing tough new rules on VIP schemes and game design.

“One problem gambler is one too many, however, and we are determined to keep up the momentum in the months ahead.”
