Macau’s gaming industry employment dropped 87% in Q4

Macau’s Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) released data that over the last quarter of 2020, new hires in the gaming industry dropped by 87%, with only 174 new employees hired during the period.

The bureau stated the declining numbers are due to Covid-19.

The number of full-time employees in the gaming sector decreased by 1,612 in Q4 2020, and by the end of the year, Macau had 56,613 registered employees, an almost 3% year-on-year decline.

“These indicators reflected a substantial decline in the demand for manpower in the gaming sector,” said DSEC.

The average monthly salary in 2020 dropped by 5% to MOP23,440 (US$3,047). December alone saw the salaries decline by 6%. The statistics also surveyed the workers and 55% said their company used some form of unpaid leave or similar measures within the past three months.

The survey also revealed 58% of the workers in the industry are women, and 94% of employees in the sector work in shifts.

Job vacancies also suffered during the last three months of 2020. “As affected by the pandemic, the number of vacancies decreased by 417 year-on-year to 26,” the survey mentions.
